Morning Musings of a Single Mom

6:30 a.m. The alarm has sounded its call three times, and I’ve dutifully snoozed each one. Today, my kiddo gets the luxury of sleeping in—no school. Meanwhile, the clock ticks toward 7:35 a.m., when I need to leave for work. The to-do list beckons, each task awaiting its turn.

Coffee. Vitamins. Shower. Dress. Feed the cats.

The world outside feels alive: birds singing their morning songs, a warm and welcoming sunrise painting the sky. Inside, two cats wait patiently, soft silhouettes in the light. They know breakfast is coming—I never let them down.

With my to-do list complete, I steal a quiet moment of “me time.” Coffee in hand, I sink into the couch and let the hum of the TV set the tone for the day ahead. It’s fleeting, but oh-so-precious.

As I back out of the driveway, a mental check clicks into place: trash day. My neighbor’s bins standing proudly by the curb remind me of my own. A quick glance at the calendar confirms it. Time for a detour. Back to the driveway I go, wheeling my trash bins to the curb—one small triumph before the day really begins.

The commute becomes a retreat as I listen to UNTAMED by Glennon Doyle. Her words strike a chord, a reminder of the untamed spirit within, the power of showing up, even on mornings like this.
